The blackened path swiveled like a snake through the forest. It looked like a large gash, destroying the beauty around it. It felt hard to the touch, and scratched Resa's pads as she walked on it. Her dark fur blened into the black path, like an ant would have. Her light brown muzzle stood out like blood on snow. Sighing, Resa traveled along the black path, with no specific destination. She just looked for food, and tried to find it as she wandered aimlessly.

Ferra sat at the bank of the river, waiting for her next meal. It was tempting to jump in because of the extremely warm weather, but the pretty Grizzly cub knew better. The sun was beating down on Ferra when, she saw a big trout. The perfect summer meal. She reacted fast as lightning, catching the fish. She dropped it on the bank of the river, and licked her jaws with satisfaction. Then, saw a black bear. She thought for a moment, then padded over, with the fish in a hidden spot. "Hello. I'm Ferra. Do you want to share some food with me?"she asked, in her gentle voice. She would be careful, she knew well the world could be a cruel place.

Aw, how sweet. Resa smiled. "I'd love to," she replied to Ferra, her belly silently yowling. "I'm Resa, by the way," she said, her dark eyes blinking. It's so nice to see a bear that's willing to share food than one who will fight for it.
Food. At the thought of food, Resa had to force her belly to keep quiet. I can't remember the last time I ate. Then Resa noticed something...different about Ferra. Unlike most other cubs, she didn't have her mother with her. Maybe she's like me. A cub without a family.
"Ferra, if you don't mind my asking, where's your family?" Resa asked, wondering if she really wanted to know.

"Oh. My mother and father? Mother was captured. Father was hunted for his meat.'' Ferra said, a glint of sadness in her wide eyes. She got the fish, and tried to split it in half. There were two pieces, not equal. She took the half with tail, the smaller piece. She pushed the other piece to Resa, then took a bite of her own. "Thank you Ursa, for this treasured piece of prey."she whispered. The grizzly bear smiled, feeling the warm, end of June sun dry her brown coat of fur.

"Oh, I'm sorry," Resa whispered. That must be why she's traveling alone. Should I tell her why I'm alone, too? I guess she deserves to know. After all, she's being very nice and she told me. Resa suppresed a sigh. "My mother died when I could hardlt walk. She had just grown too old and weak to live any longer. Now all that's left of her is her spirit,. Rsa said, choking back her tears.
She smiled when Ferra gave her the larger part of the fish. She is just so nice. "So are you on your way o Great Bear Lake?" Resa sked through a large mouthful of salmon.

"Yeah. Are you as well?" Ferra asked, feeling sorry for Resa. Though she had just met Resa, she thought the black bear was quite a nice bear. She also thought they would make great friends. They had so much in common. Ferra took another bite of trout, then happily. The grizzly bear notice even though they might be the same age, she was bigger than Resa. Ferra wondered why bears were always saying that bears of different pelt colors couldn't be friends.

"Yeah. That's what my mother said to do when she was dying. To go to the Great Bear Lake," Resa replied. Resa had just met Ferra, but she wished that they could become firends, and maybe even travel together. Ferra was really nice. She didn't deserve to lose her family. "Say...Ferra, do you want to go with me to the Great Bear Lake?" Resa asked, hoping Ferra would say yes.

"I would love to! I get so lonely sometimes. I need a friendly black bear to keep me company." Ferra said playfully, her brown eyes shining with happiness. She took a last bite of fish, and walked over to Resa.

Smiling, Resa dinished off the last of the fish. Her belly felt a lot better after eating it. "Thanks for the fish," she said to Ferra. She touched noses with her new friend, glad that she had someone to keep her company. So many bears want to travel alone. Well, not me. What's the point of being lonely? "And I think I would need a friendly grizzly bear tokepp me company, too." Resa added with a sly smile.

Ferra touched noses with her new friend as well. "Before we go, let's have a drink first."she suggested, running over to the river. She began to drink the cool, refreshing water happily. Resa would be a great partner, Ferra just knew it.

"Okay!" Resa agreed, running up after Ferra to the river. It's going to be a long journey, we'll need all of our strength. resa dipped her toungue in the water and lapped it up. It refreshed her senses, and she felt ready to travel. "Do you know which way the Great Bear Lake is, because I have no idea. Mother just told my to travel north along the mountains," Resa said, wondering which way they would have to go.

Rose walked along the BlackPath always checking for firebeasts. She lifted her noise to the sky and took a deep breath in. The smell of other bears flooded her nose, and she knew they were close. She trotted over to some brush nearby. She started to slowly creep closer and closer to where the scent of the bears where coming from. The smell of the firebeast drifted in the air, and her ears pricked at its roar. She continued creeping through the brush until she should she the two bears. They seemed close to her age and she watched them carefully. She froze as a twig snapped under her paws.
